Student Engagement in the Classroom: A Reading and Conversation Series

This fall, we invite you to join in a reading and conversation series focused on student engagement. Each month, we’ll share just one article to prompt and provoke conversation. Through reading and discussion, we hope to make space for you to share your thoughts about student engagement, as well as explore the many facets of student engagement and its implications for teaching and learning. (You’re welcome to join us to talk about student engagement, even if you haven’t read the article!)

April’s lunch conversation, moderated by Roberto Lint Sagarena, will center on a facet of our work at Middlebury that deserves more attention, reflection, and perhaps even reform. From Climate Despair to Climate Repair: Pedagogical Approaches to Teaching Climate

To help raise awareness for Worldwide Climate Justice and Education Week, the CTLR welcomes you to a conversation with faculty and staff colleagues, led by Julia Berazneva (Economics) and Minna Brown (Climate Action Program). We will gather around the lunch table to explore this question with those who are experienced in this practice and those who are wanting to learn how.

Faculty Mentor Lunch : Life After Tenure

The CTLR welcomes all faculty to enjoy lunch together and to engage with new and veteran colleagues in a discussion about what life looks like after tenure. Come for tasty food, camaraderie, and lively conversation about the post-tenure world at Middlebury. On the one hand, a major professional milestone has passed; on the other hand, committee work, chairing of departments, and a new level of professional commitments typically begins in earnest at this point.

Establishing Expectations – What do we know about our students?

On Tuesday, February 27, Arthur Chiaravalli, scholar, educator, and now administrator at Champlain Valley Union High School, will join us to share his insights on what is shaping the academic and emotional development of today’s high school students. As the founder of Teachers Going Gradeless, Arthur will also entertain questions about the impact of different forms of evaluation and assessment, including “-less” grading as well as no grading within a grading environment.
