Screening and discussion with Toby Perl Freilich, director of the documentary Inventing Our Life: The Kibbutz Experiment, which opened in New York in April 2012. Set against the backdrop of the glorious 100-year history of the Kibbutz, the film reveals the heartbreak and hope of Israel’s modern kibbutz movement as a new generation struggles to ensure its survival. Can a radically socialist institution survive a new capitalist reality? How will painful reforms affect those who still believe in the kibbutz experiment, and continue to call it home?

— a Russian investigative journalist, political scientist, writer, and radio host — will talk about Russian society and politics in the context of Russia’s invasion of, and ongoing war in, Ukraine.

The Rohatyn Center for Global Affairs presents Matt Connelly, professor of international and global history at Columbia University, and co-director of its social science research center, the Institute for Social and Economic Research and Policy. Connelly is also the principal investigator of History Lab, a project that uses data science to analyze state secrecy, with a focus on intelligence, surveillance, and weapons of mass destruction.

German composer, Matthias Krüger, will lead a lecture about music composition across national borders and between disciplines. He will highlight the rich dialogue between artists of different nationalities, as well as between forms, in this case, between choreographers and composers. Attendees will have the opportunity to engage in experiential exercises as we ask: How do we translate between cultures and disciplines when composing original material?

Over the past two decades, China has increased its investment across the African continent, leading to economic development. As much of this economic development is located, where fragile ecosystems intersect with weak governance, the resultant environmental costs can be high. Mustapha Manneh, West Africa Regional Editor of the China Dialogue Trust, will speak about the social, financial, and environmental impact that Chinese fishing investments are having in The Gambia.

Diplomat Thomas Leary served in Russia at two very different periods: 1999-2004 and 2015-2019. His first term there came during the growing decline in U.S.-Russian relations and the difficult aftermath of Russia’s 1998 financial crisis. By the time Mr. Leary returned to St. Petersburg as U.S. Consul General in 2015, the freeze between the two countries was deepening because of Russia’s illegal annexation of Crimea. Meanwhile at home Russia had become both much more prosperous and more authoritarian.
