The Rohatyn Center for Global Affairs program on Global and International History presents Aparna Kapadia, associate professor of history at Williams College and ” Walking with the Mahatma: Kasturba Gandhi’s Political Life.”

Fritz Bartel is a diplomatic historian at Texas A&M University. His book on the end of the Cold War (Harvard University Press, 2022), The Triumph of Broken Promises, has been widely praised for its political-economic interpretation of the demise of the Soviet Union and the rise of neo-liberalism in the United States.

“Israel’s Strategic Position in a Volatile Middle East” by Daniel Kurtzer, professor in Middle Eastern Policy Studies at Princeton University, former Ambassador of the United States to Israel (2001-2005) and Egypt (1997-2001). Screening and discussion with Toby Perl Freilich, director of the documentary Inventing Our Life: The Kibbutz Experiment, which opened in New York in April 2012. Set against the backdrop of the glorious 100-year history of the Kibbutz, the film reveals the heartbreak and hope of Israel’s modern kibbutz movement as a new generation struggles to ensure its survival. Can a radically socialist institution survive a new capitalist reality? How will painful reforms affect those who still believe in the kibbutz experiment, and continue to call it home?

The Rohatyn Center for Global Affairs program on Autocracy and Democracy presents Fuat Keyman and Atila Eralp and “Turkey at 100: Democratic Politics and Foreign Policy under Erdogan Rule.”

— a Russian investigative journalist, political scientist, writer, and radio host — will talk about Russian society and politics in the context of Russia’s invasion of, and ongoing war in, Ukraine.

The Rohatyn Center for Global Affairs presents Matt Connelly, professor of international and global history at Columbia University, and co-director of its social science research center, the Institute for Social and Economic Research and Policy. Connelly is also the principal investigator of History Lab, a project that uses data science to analyze state secrecy, with a focus on intelligence, surveillance, and weapons of mass destruction.

German composer, Matthias Krüger, will lead a lecture about music composition across national borders and between disciplines. He will highlight the rich dialogue between artists of different nationalities, as well as between forms, in this case, between choreographers and composers. Attendees will have the opportunity to engage in experiential exercises as we ask: How do we translate between cultures and disciplines when composing original material?

Over the past two decades, China has increased its investment across the African continent, leading to economic development. As much of this economic development is located, where fragile ecosystems intersect with weak governance, the resultant environmental costs can be high. Mustapha Manneh, West Africa Regional Editor of the China Dialogue Trust, will speak about the social, financial, and environmental impact that Chinese fishing investments are having in The Gambia.
