Frequently Asked Questions
Q When are packages and mail available to students?
Mail and packages are received from all service carriers Monday – Friday and must be logged into our tracking system. Email notices are sent out daily for all items received.
Q How do I pickup item(s) when they arrive?
Once a package arrives on campus, it must be logged into our tracking system. You will receive an email from Middlebury when your package is ready to be picked up at the McCullough Mail Center.
- Package location depends on size.
- All packages will be processed via the QTrak system.
- Location will be noted in an email received (Locker System Bank # 1 or Bank #2)
- Packages too large for lockers will be in the mailroom.
- An email will be sent stating the location.
Notification of package arrival by the carrier does NOT mean that your package is ready for pick-up. You MUST wait until we have processed your package and you have received an email from the Mail Center.
Q What types of packages can I send to the Mail Center?
Perishable Goods
Perishables must be clearly labeled as such and must be picked up within 2 business days of notification. We do not have the ability to refrigerate packages. The Mail Center reserves the right to discard any perishable items that have not been picked up within 2 days.
Alcohol
We refuse all shipments of alcohol to students.
Instacart, Uber Eats, Same-Day Shipments
The Mail Center does not receive same-day shipments from apps such as Instacart or Uber Eats. If you order through one of these carriers, it is your responsibility to meet the delivery driver in an outdoor location when they arrive on campus. Please be aware, these drivers are often unfamiliar with the Middlebury campus and if they cannot reach you, they may leave your items unlabeled near a building entrance where it is likely to become lost or damaged.
Prohibited Items
Packages that clearly contain items prohibited per the Residential Life Policies in the handbook should not be shipped to the college. If a prohibited item is received, it may be returned to the sender and Residential Life may be notified. Residential Life Policies
Q How long do I have to pick up my mail or packages?
The Mail Center will hold onto mail and packages for 14 days. You will receive an email notification when your mail/packages arrive, then 2 follow up reminders if you have not picked up your items.
After 14 days, USPS and UPS packages will be returned to sender. Amazon and FedEx ground do not accept packages returned to sender and will be sent to the Recycling Center.
Q I am a first year/returning student, can I send packages early and pick them up on move-in day?
Please do not send packages prior to August 19th. Due to limited storage space any packages sent before this date may be subject to be returned to sender. You may send packages no earlier than 2-3 days before your move-in date.
Q Do you have hand trucks available to help with moving large boxes?
Hand trucks are available upon request at the student package window. A student ID must be provided to borrow any equipment.
Q How can I change my forwarding address after graduation?
To change your forwarding address after graduation. Need link for forwarding address change
Mail will only be forwarded for 1 year after graduation.
Q I need to have medication shipped, can it go to the Mail Center?
Medications that require refrigeration should not be shipped to the Mail Center and other medications shipped may not be available immediately. If you have medications that need to be refrigerated or are of an urgent nature, please contact the Health Center at healthservices@middlebury.edu.
Q How do I refuse delivery of a package?
If a student does not want to accept an unopened package that has been delivered to the Mail Center by UPS, FedEx, or USPS, the student can refuse delivery. The Mail Center will return it to the carrier, but ONLY if it is unopened. If it has been opened then it must be handled as a return.
Q Can my roommate/friend pickup my mail for me?
You may designate someone to pick up your mail/packages on your behalf if you are unable to do so. We will not accept permission for the entire semester. Please send an email to mailcenter@middlebury.edu and include the name of the person that will be picking up your mail. They will need to show their Middlebury ID at the Mail Center.
Q My package was marked delivered by the carrier (USPS, Amazon, UPS, FedEx) days ago and I still do not have a notification from the Mail Center?
The most common cause for this type of delay is the mail/package is not addressed correctly or is missing information. Packages are often sent with wrong box numbers, addresses, names or even ripped labels. Any mail or package that we cannot identify will be held for 14 days. If you do not receive a package notification from the Mail Center and the carrier has notified you that the package was delivered, please contact the Mail Center, and provide your tracking information, date of delivery and any other information that may help identify your package. Packages or mail that are left unclaimed are returned to sender.
Q Are there any items that we can't send to the College Mail Room?
We ask that you do not ship any of the following items:
- Futons
- Couches/Lounge furniture
- Air Conditioners (personal/window ACs are not allowed in any residence hall)
- Bed frames (College owned furniture must stay in your room per the Student Housing Contract)
