Marjorie Lamberti

Back to Middlebury History Online

Marjorie Lamberti, Charles A. Dana Professor of History was the second woman at Middlebury to be appointed full professor. She grew up in New Haven, Connecticut, where she studied German in high school and developed a passionate interest in German culture. She matriculated to Smith College, where she was inducted into the Phi Beta Kappa Society and continued her education at Free University in Berlin and at Yale University. Lamberti began teaching at Middlebury in 1964 and devoted almost four decades to teaching German history and the history of Europe Jewry while establishing herself as a distinguished scholar, specifically in nineteenth and twentieth-century German educational systems. Her commitment to teaching and dedication to her students led to the foundation of the Marjorie Lamberti Faculty Appreciation Award. She retired in 2002 and remains a faculty emerita active on campus.
