Over 150 students competed in this year’s DataFest!

DataFest is a celebration of data where teams of students work over the course of a weekend to find and share meaning in large, rich, and complex datasets.

For this year’s DataFest, students were asked to pretend they were starting a new company. Ideas from students ranged from law firms to fireworks manufacturers to a mom-and-pop cannoli business.

They were then given a variety of datasets, including information on past corporate lease pricing and availability, local economic factors, and Bureau of Labor Statistics employment data. Students were tasked with using these datasets and a variety of external data to justify where they would build their new company’s headquarters.

Students competed from 6pm on Friday, April 4th until 11am on Sunday, April 6th, often working late into the night (and early morning!), using a variety of data and statistical methods to justify their decisions. There were maps, graphs, animations, models, and more! Students then presented their work to fellow students and a panel of judges. The winners of “Best Presentation” are pictured here.
