Janet Hulnick joined Middlebury in March 2019 as the Interim Immigration Specialist. She provided immigration support for international students, faculty and staff until December of that year. She is now a permanent employee with ISSS as an Immigration Specialist and works remotely three days a week. Prior to her work at Middlebury, Janet served as the Director of International Student and Scholar Services at School for International Training (SIT) Graduate Institute for more than 25 years. She has expertise in F-1 and J-1 student government regulations and served as the Primary Designated Student Officer (PDSO) and the Responsible Officer (RO) for SIT. Janet enjoys supporting international students with their overall adjustment to higher education and to living in the United States. She has developed and conducted training programs on culture shock and U.S. cultural adjustment as well as cross-cultural relationships.



Janet is a certified teacher of English as a Second Language (ESL) and has taught both elementary and secondary school students from, China, Mexico and Costa Rica. Currently, Janet is teaching English on-line to elementary school students in Vietnam.  Bilingual in English and Spanish, Janet has also taught Spanish at the elementary and secondary level.



Janet holds a BA from the University of Arizona and a MA from School for International Training (SIT) Graduate Institute. She has TESOL Certification from the Centro Espiral Mana.



Janet lives in Brattleboro, Vermont with her husband and enjoys spending time with her two grown children, teaching, reading fiction, traveling, meeting new people from all over the world, and practicing yoga.
