REQUESTS FOR DEPARTMENT OF PUBLIC SAFETY REPORTS
Middlebury Department of Public Safety (DPS) reports are not typically disclosed. Any requests that may be submitted shall be reviewed on a case-by-case basis and may be released in full, released with redactions, or withheld depending on the circumstances, privacy and safety considerations, applicable law, and Middlebury policy.
Before any report is released, Middlebury may review and redact information to protect privacy, confidentiality, security, legal interests, or other legitimate institutional concerns. Information relating to students, witnesses, victims, employees, medical matters, security operations, investigations, and privileged communications may be withheld or redacted.
Under Middlebury’s FERPA policy, reports created and maintained by DPS for law enforcement purposes are generally not considered education reports under FERPA. However, such reports remain subject to review before any disclosure is made.
Important: Middlebury is a private educational institution and is not subject to public reports laws applicable to governmental agencies. Submission of a request does not create an obligation to disclose any particular report. Middlebury reserves the right to deny requests, withhold reports, or provide reports in redacted form as appropriate.
Questions may be directed to the Department of Public Safety or the Office of General Counsel.
