Understanding when and why to use specific research methods and knowing how to use them well, effectively, safely, and ethically is essential to conducting sound research work in the academic sphere and in the professional world.

Social Science Research Methods (SSRM) at Middlebury is an ongoing collaborative development that serves multiple needs of students and faculty involved in social science research across the institution.

We are developing training modules in research design and data collection that introduce topics such as formulating research questions, identifying appropriate methods to explore those questions, and tutorials focused on specific research methods, including the following:

  • Surveys (questionnaires and interviews)
  • Ethnographic studies and fieldwork
  • Archival work
  • Media analysis
  • Experiments

About the Modules

The modules could be a complement to a course or a timely refresher when preparing a fellowship, grant application, or research assignment. They offer tools to develop skills applicable to independent research or extracurricular engagement during undergraduate or graduate studies, competitive postgraduate fellowships, or the workplace.

The SSRM modules provide an introduction to the following:

  • Formulation of a research question
  • Identification of appropriate methods to explore that question
  • Tutorials on specific research methods( such as surveys, interviews, and ethnographic research)
  • The Data analysis process
  • Publication and sharing of findings
