Belonging is the foundation of student success at Middlebury College. The Centers for Belonging share one fundamental goal: making sure every student has a place where they are seen, supported, and celebrated.

Anderson Freeman Resource Center

The Anderson Freeman Resource Center, commonly called “The AFC” is Middlebury’s Intercultural Center. Our work enhances the experience of students of color, first-generation students, and low-income students through programs and events, support and advocacy, cultural connections and celebrations, and the administration of the First Gen Experience, including the First@Midd orientation pathway and First@Midd Year-Round Workshops.

We are a community-driven third-space located in Carr Hall on College Street. The center is a colorful and vibrant space with a kitchen, study rooms, a library, open and reservable community gathering spaces, a meditation space, and a salon that is open for individual use, with professional appointment options once a month.

We also support and advise our cultural student orgs known as MILC—Middlebury Intercultural Leaders Coalition—many of which might interest you!

Prism Center for Queer and Trans Life

The Prism Center for Queer and Trans Life, often shortened to Prism, provides a space for the campus community to engage in conversation, education, and programming to explore gender, sexual, and romantic identities.

Prism is a vibrant, warm place located at 24 Hillcrest Road in Farrell House. The center has a kitchen and multipurpose gathering spaces open for reservations. Prism offers free community health resources for students located in the two single-stall bathrooms, like sexual health items (external and internal condoms, dental dams, and lube); personal hygiene products (toothbrushes, toothpaste, body and deodorant wipes, dry shampoo, and more); and TransTape, a gender-affirming and safe binding tool. Prism also runs the Gender-Affirming Clothing Closet, providing gently used and fully laundered clothing for free to students, as well as new cloth binders, tucking underwear, and other undergarments.

Prism also hosts events and programs throughout the year, such as Queer Book Club, Popcorn & Pride (a monthly movie night), and Prism Wellness Day. Scott Center for Spiritual and Religious Life

The Charles P. Scott Center for Spiritual and Religious Life, known by most as the Scott Center, is an interfaith hub that provides a place to gather, celebrate, be social, and explore a range of religious and spiritual identities.

The Scott Center staff welcomes and advocates for all members of the Middlebury community. They are educators, spiritual caregivers, ritual leaders, and allies. The chaplains also support the students living in the Interfaith House and advise religious student organizations in the Religious Life Council, working actively with those groups around needs, religious practices, and celebrations.

Located in Hathaway House at 135 South Main Street, the Scott Center is a hospitable and relaxing space for those hoping to delve into spiritual traditions. The center features a cozy living room with an active fireplace that is often lit during the fall and winter months, and a fully equipped meditation space that students can access during open hours.

The center also has satellite spaces used for events and community gatherings, such as the campus Chapel, Crest Room in McCullough Union, and faith-specific rooms across campus.
