Health and Safety on Campus this Summer

COVID-19

Please read our current Covid-19 information.

Required Measles Proof of Immunity

The Vermont Department of Health is requiring that all Bread Loafers be able to provide proof of immunization from measles before the start of our summer sessions. In the time leading up to the conference faculty are assigned a temporary Middlebury email and given access to a secure form for uploading their proof of immunity document. In the meantime, please note that there will be three options for fulfilling this requirement of measles immunization:

  1. obtain proof of immunization from already extant records;
  2. get a blood test that proves immunity from a doctor or clinic;
  3. get an immunization shot for measles (MMR) from a local pharmacy or doctor and provide proof of it.

Note: Individuals born prior to January 1, 1957 are assumed to be immune to measles and do not have to provide proof of immunity. Instead of uploading a proof of immunity document via the forthcoming secure form, these individuals will provide a document showing their date of birth.

You’ll find more details about measles and the College’s approach on Middlebury’s measles information website. (We’ll be in touch this spring with more details about your temporary Middlebury email and access to the secure form.)

Middlebury College Policies

In support of our community effort to promote a campus and workplace environment that is safe and welcoming for all Middlebury students, faculty, and staff, we ask all faculty to review the Middlebury College Policies. Please plan to review this important information before your arrival on campus this summer.

Should you have any comments, questions, or concerns in the time leading up to or during the conference, please let us know by contacting one of the Bread Loaf staff members below:

Event Formats

The Bread Loaf Writers’ Conference offers a variety of pedagogical formats that in casual parlance are sometimes conflated, confused, or used interchangeably with one another. In an effort to clarify these formats (and with apologies for possible pedantry), descriptions are listed here to help you as you prepare your various events or presentations on the mountain.

Lectures and Classes

We invite you to give a lecture and/or craft class. These two formats are especially popular with Bread Loafers and make up an essential part of the conversation that takes place on the mountain.

Lectures are delivered in the Little Theater and are usually read texts of 45-50 minutes presenting some literary question or topic. Their attendance is conference-wide.

Craft classes are smaller, limited to 25 students who sign up based on the topic in advance, and as their name suggests, they are more hands-on or “craft” related (close reading of a text, writing or revision exercise, etc.) and are held in classrooms. The craft class can be either 50 minutes or 1 hour 15 minutes.

We ask for your interest in offering a lecture or craft class via the online Faculty Information Form, and if if we are able to add either or both to our roster, we pay additionally: $1000 for a lecture; $500 for a craft class.

Decisions about lectures and class offerings will be made by the director in late spring or early summer to guarantee your time to prepare.

See a list of past lectures and classes.
