Biology Advanced Placement Credit
If you received a 5 on the biology advanced placement exam Middlebury College will grant one college credit that will count toward the 36 units required for graduation. However, because the biology department does not offer any introductory course that is the equivalent of an AP biology course, advanced placement credit does not exempt a student from any of the published requirements for the major, minor, or joint majors, nor can it satisfy the college's distribution requirement. Thus, a score of 5 on the AP exam does not automatically exempt you from needing to complete BIOL0140 or BIOL0145. In order to do this you must pass the bypass exam.
Statistics Advanced Placement Credit
Students with a score of 4 or 5 on the AP Statistics exam are exempt from BIOL 0211. Biology majors do not need an additional Biology course to make up this one-course credit.
International Baccalaureate (IB)
IB students who passed with a score of 6 or 7 get 2 college credits for each exam passed that can be used to fulfill the 36 unit requirement for graduation. You cannot use IB credits to get course credit for BIOL0140 or BIOL0145. If you have IB credit and wish to bypass BIOL0140 or BIOL0145 you must take the bypass exam
Bypass exams are administered at the start of fall and spring terms, and under special circumstances by request of the department chair the rest of the year. Anyone can take the bypass exam, not just students with AP or IB credit. You may take a bypass exam only once.
If you pass the exam, then BIOL0140 or BIOL0145 (as appropriate) is waived as a requirement for the Biology major, and you are eligible to enroll in courses that have the appropriate course as a prerequisite. Students do not receive "course credit".
Biology majors do not need an additional course to satisfy major requirements if they bypass BIOL 140 or BIOL 0145.
Transfer students who have BIOL 0140 or BIOL 0145 equivalents do not have to take the bypass exam.
