The Euro at 20:

Past, Present and Future

2019 marks the 20th anniversary of the introduction of the euro. From post-war beginnings through a half century of peace and into the challenges of today, the euro has been a symbol of the European Union's efforts to foster international cooperation and shared economic prosperity.

What are the challenges involved in maintaining a currency union without a full political and fiscal union, and how has Europe addressed them? How did the euro weather the economic tensions of the Great Recession? How will it survive Europe’s current political crisis of legitimacy and populist backlash?

This year the International Politics and Economics Symposium will explore these themes with guest talks by political scientist Vivien Schmidt (Boston University), historian Harold James (Princeton), and economist Thierry Warin (Skema Business School) followed by a dinner with the speakers and students.
