How Did You Spend The Summer? Let Me Count The Ways.

Jonathan Perlman ’19 and Kevin Collins ’20 are two math majors spending their summer at Middlebury as research assistants under Professor John Schmitt with funding from the Undergraduate Research Office. The goal of their research is to tackle problems in zero-sum theory in combinatorics. Zero-sum theory asks what parameters must be placed on combinatorial objects to guarantee that some subset of the objects sums to zero modulo n for an integer n. Through the process of the research, they are learning about various mathematical tools to solve zero-sum problems such as the polynomial method and Möbius inversion.
