Alumni Nominees for the Board of Trustees
Adrian Benepe '78
Adrian has worked for nearly 30 years protecting and enhancing New York City’s natural and historic beauty. He currently serves as Commissioner of the Department of Parks & Recreation, appointed by Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg in January 2002. In this role he has focused on improving park facilities and programs for children, developing new waterfront parks and greenways, and making New York City bloom with millions of new trees and flowers, and hundreds of gardens.
His career includes overseeing natural resources, horticulture and forestry, monuments and historic house museums, and public affairs, all at the Park Department. He also worked at the New York Botanical Garden and the Municipal Art Society, a civic advocacy organization.
In additions to his B.A. in English Literature from Middlebury College, Adrian also earned a Master’s Degree in Journalism from Columbia University (1981) where he was awarded a Pulitzer Fellowship. He lives with his wife, Charlotte Glasser (Middlebury 78.5) and two sons, Alex (Middlebury 09) and Erik a senior at Hunter College High School, on the Upper West Side of Manhattan where he grew up. He likes to run, walk, bicycle, and cross-country ski in Central and Riverside Parks, (and in Middlebury!) and throughout the City’s park system.
S. Carolyn Ramos '93
Carolyn is a shareholder and director with the law firm of Butt Thornton & Baehr PC in Albuquerque, New Mexico where she practices primarily in the defense of trucking, medical malpractice, product liability, and other catastrophic personal injury cases. She was born and raised in New York City and earned her bachelors degree from Middlebury College in 1993. From there, she became a Teach for America Corps Member, teaching bilingual elementary school in Washington, D.C. In 2000, Carolyn earned her juris doctorate from the University of New Mexico School of Law where she was the recipient of the Lewis Sutin Award for Excellence in Trial Advocacy, the National Association of Women Lawyers Award and Honors in Clinical Law. She is President-Elect of the New Mexico Defense Lawyers Association, Past Chair of the State Bar of New Mexico Young Lawyers Division, a member of the New Mexico and National Hispanic Bar Associations, the Defense Research Institute, American Bar Association, a panelist on the New Mexico Medical Review Commission and a former member of the Supreme Court Rules of Evidence Committee and Second Judicial District Nominating Commission. Carolyn has remained active in the Middlebury Community since graduation, participating in college fairs, interviewing prospective students and returning to Midd in April 2008 to present her lecture “Once Upon an Abogada: The socio-cultural implications of life and litigation for one Latina.” Carolyn was recently named one of New Mexico’s top 40 professionals under 40 by New Mexico Business Weekly Magazine. She loves the Yankees, salsa music and creative writing but most notably, Carolyn is the proud mother of four-year-old Santiago and wife of Financial Planner Chad Cooper '95

Matthew Goebel '94
Matt is Vice President of dg&a, a boutique consulting firm specializing in internal communications. He works with large organizations – including McDonald’s, Lockheed Martin and Eli Lilly – to develop and implement strategic employee communications and engagement programs. Prior to joining dg&a, Matt was Director of Offshore Competitor Intelligence at Accenture where he worked with sales teams to understand competitive challenges around the world and to develop sales messages and strategies to overcome those threats. Prior to that, Matt managed the internal and external marketing campaign for Accenture’s expanding capabilities in geographies such as China and India. Matt started his career in the art world at Leslie Hindman Auctioneers, at the time the fifth largest auction house in the country.
Matt received his B.A. from Middlebury College, and his MSJ from the Medill School of Journalism at Northwestern University. In his free time, Matt has curated two art shows at the Zolla / Lieberman Gallery in Chicago, is President of the Associate Board at the Museum of Contemporary Photography and serves on the board of the Hinsdale Hospital Foundation. Matt and his wife live in Oak Brook with their two children and an old dachshund named Henry.
Phyllis Wendell Mackey '78
Phyl is a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist in private practice in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, which certainly isn’t what she expected to be doing when she graduated from Middlebury in 1978 with a major in political science. She currently serves individuals, couples and families facing challenges including child and adolescent behavior problems, family and relationship difficulties and life cycle transitions. She also works with clients who are dealing with depression, anxiety, trauma histories and PTSD (Posttraumatic Stress Disorder). Phyllis is trained in EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing). She is President-Elect of the New Hampshire Association of Marriage and Family Therapists. In addition to numerous volunteer board and committee positions, Phyl has remained active with Middlebury in a variety of roles including: class secretary, class agent, reunion gift committee co-chair, reunion social co-chair, alumni admissions committee chairperson, and alumni admissions interviewer. She is thrilled that son Wil is at Midd in the class of 2011.5 and daughter Anna will be joining him next February as a member of the class of 2013.5.
Andre Berot Spring '88
Since her graduation from Middlebury in 1988, Andre has been an active and enthusiastic member of the Middlebury Alumni Admissions Program as a member of the Los Angeles and Louisiana Committees. She has shown great leadership through her position as chair of the inaugural Southeast Pennsylvania committee and the Los Angeles area committee, and she is currently serving as chair of the Pennsylvania-at-Large Committee, where she recruits new members and makes sure every applicant in the area meets with an alumni volunteer. Her tireless energy shows in each interaction she has with both Middlebury alumni and prospective students.
Andre has been married to Harry Lynn Spring III for over 16 years and is the proud mother of Amelia Berot Spring, age 6 and Harry Lynn "Conley" Spring IV, age 3. Busily working in a career supporting her family as a biopharmaceutical sales and marketing professional for over 18 years.
