Additional Requirements for the Chinese School

In addition to the general application requirements, applicants to the Chinese School must submit the following (click here) for instructions for the 6-week graduate program):

Course History (Prior Instruction in Chinese)

If you are applying to level 2 or higher, please supply the following information in a separate document and send it to us by email or regular mail:

  • full name of applicant
  • level of course(s)
  • institution and dates for each course
  • names of instructors
  • hours per week (with breakdown of lecture, drill, laboratory, conversation, etc.)
  • textbooks used and extent to which the content of the text was covered
Current Middlebury Undergraduate Students:

To gain admission to the Chinese School, Middlebury undergraduates are expected to maintain an average of B (3.0) in their Chinese language courses (1st- through 3rd-year Chinese and all CHNS 400-level courses taught in Chinese), through the winter term preceding the summer of attendance.

Applications from students whose average in their Chinese language courses is below B but whose most recent grade is B or above will be considered on a case-by-case basis, as will applications from students whose average meets the minimum but whose most recent grade is B- or below.

In addition, students are expected to maintain a B- (2.7)college grade point average overall.
