Sören Steding

Faculty

Sören Steding teaches German language, literature, and culture at Luther College in Decorah, Iowa. A native of Germany, he received his M.A. in German from Vanderbilt University (Nashville, TN) and his Ph.D. in German from the University of Regensburg (Germany). He also has passed the first state examination for teaching at a Gymnasium for the subjects German and History.
At Luther College, he is the director of the Münster program and regularly takes students abroad for an academic semester in Germany. He teaches all levels of German, with special emphasis on beginning German. One of his favorite courses is German Play, where students write and perform an original play in German.
His research focus is soldiership (Soldatentum) and war in German literature and culture. He also is an accomplished writer of fiction, with several published short stories, winning the Kärtner Krimipreis in 2008 and the Evolver Literaturpreis in 2009. Other interests of his are science fiction, computer games, and running.

GRMN 3301 - Advanced Grammar & Comm      

This course meets two hours per day to analyze and provide advanced grammatical structures, provide intensive written and oral language training, offer insights into German ways of perception, and teach strategies of communication and language learning. For this course, some additional language and computer laboratory work is required.

Required text:

GRMN 3303 - German Culture & Society      

This course introduces aspects of German culture, society, and politics to facilitate a better understanding of contemporary Germany. The reading and writing assignments also aim at increasing vocabulary and reinforcing grammatical as well as communicative structures.

The instructor will provide all required texts.
