Professor Mercedes Fernández Isla has a B.A. in Romance Languages Philology and a Master of Arts in Translation of French, both from the Universidad Complutense de Madrid as well as a Ph.D. in Hispanic Language and Literatures from Boston University. She has more than 30 years experience teaching and coordinating Spanish courses in France, the United States and Spain. She is currently a professor at the Middlebury College and the New York University programs in Madrid, where she teaches at the graduate and undergraduate levels. She is a Certificate Interviewer of the American Council of Teachers of Foreign Languages. She has participated in several projects on second language acquisition, where her area of interest lies, specifically everything related to motivation in the learning of a second language.
