Meningococcal B Vaccine Guidance

Serogroup B meningococcal vaccine guidance 10.2015

Parton Center for Health and Wellness officials currently follow CDC Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) recommendations regarding meningitis vaccine use in college students. The ACIP recommends routine vaccination with the   quadrivalent meningococcal conjugate vaccine (MenACWY) for first-year college students living in residence halls.  This is also a Vermont State requirement.

Meningitis B vaccines are not currently recommended for routine use  in first-year college students living in residence halls, but might be recommended in the unlikely event of a campus outbreak.

Exceptions to this general recommendation include certain students with underlying medical conditions who might be at increased risk for meningococcal disease and should receive MenB vaccine. These persons include:

  • Persons with persistent complement component deficiencies, including inherited or chronic deficiencies in C3, C5-9, properdin, factor D, factor H, or who are taking eculizumab (Soliris).
  • Persons with anatomic or functional asplenia, including sickle cell disease .
  • Microbiologists routinely exposed to isolates of Neisseria meningitidis.
  • Persons identified as at increased risk because of a serogroup B meningococcal disease outbreak
