What is the Porter Hospital internship?

The Porter Medical Center Internship is an intensive month long community based internship for pre-medical students. Interns are assigned a physician preceptor and spend the month shadowing health care providers both in the office setting and the operating room. Students also participate in electives, which include riding along with the ambulance crew, shadowing in the nursing home/rehab facility, visiting hospice and learning how blood samples are processed in the hospital lab. The weekly classroom component of the internship includes selected readings and presentations from invited guests. In previous years we have had representatives from the UVM College of Medicine admissions team to speak about the admissions process, and had a panel of allied health professionals discuss their career choices. Upon completion of the internship, each student will be asked to reflect on their month long experience and submit a paper that explores a medical topic of interest.

While the internship allows for some flexibility, the expectation is that students will be in a clinical setting for roughly 25 hours per week, totaling a minimum of 100 hours for the term. Most students take full advantage of the many opportunities made available to them at Porter and engage more than the minimum number of hours.

The Health Professions Team will coordinate the review of candidates with head preceptor of the Porter Internship, Dr. Eric Benz. 15 interns will be selected; in 2014 there were 51 applicants for the 15 slots, so the process is competitive. Applications are due at 11:59 PM on Sunday, October 11, 2015 and you will be notified of your status no later than October 14, 2015. Late applications will not be considered. Your participation in the internship will be contingent upon your complying with our immunization requirements and completion of an Assumption of Risk and Code of Conduct Form. You will also be responsible for completing an application for Winter Term credit. Hannah Benz will serve as the Academic Sponsor for all the Porter Hospital Interns.

Please submit the following material via MOJO no later than 11:59 PM on Sunday, October 11, 2015: Cover letter, resume, internship selection form, written responses to questions.
