Bread Loaf is a mountain, a school, a conference.
School of English
Each summer since 1920, the Bread Loaf School of English has offered a rich array of graduate courses in literature, the teaching of writing, creative writing, and theater arts to students from across the United States and the world.
Writers’ Conferences
Bread Loaf Writers’ Conference is the oldest writers' conference in America, convening yearly in mid-August at Middlebury's Bread Loaf Mountain campus amid the Green Mountain National Forest in Ripton, Vermont.
History & Culture
It began with a gift of land nearly a century ago. And those who have spent time there—Frost, Welty, Ellison, and Stegner, among others—simply call it The Mountain. A perfect place to study and celebrate the written word.
