  • Many to One: The Costs and Benefits of Summary Measures

Evaluating the impact of an athlete’s performance on a team, deciding on a treatment plan for a cancer patient and evaluating how to encourage people to manage their weight are all interesting and carefully studied problems. In these examples and many others, decision makers often ultimately rely on scoring systems that reduce high dimensional data to a single value. We present the ways that scoring systems are similar across many applications, how they provide insights, how they can lead to difficulties and how they can be evaluated and improved.

This year, Carolyn, Sophia, and Tara Federoff are reviving these circles to continue our conversation and exploration into what holistic sustainability really means in the world that we live in today and what better, more just, and holistic futures look like.

  • Contemporary Russia Through a Diplomat's Eye

Diplomat Thomas Leary served in Russia at two very different periods: 1999-2004 and 2015-2019. His first term there came during the growing decline in U.S.-Russian relations and the difficult aftermath of Russia’s 1998 financial crisis. By the time Mr. Leary returned to St. Petersburg as U.S. Consul General in 2015, the freeze between the two countries was deepening because of Russia’s illegal annexation of Crimea. Meanwhile at home Russia had become both much more prosperous and more authoritarian.
