Join Professor Rhae Lynn Barnes as she explores the often-overlooked legacy of blackface minstrelsy in Vermont and across the United States. Drawing from her award-winning book “Darkology: Blackface and the American Way of Entertainment,” this lecture will delve into Vermont’s century-old “Kake Walk” tradition, the student activism that helped dismantle it, and the broader cultural history that shaped systemic racism in America.

Public Lecture: The Fats of Life - The Metabolic Origins of Neurodegeneration
Bio: Dr Corthalis is an associated professor and multidisciplinary researcher with a broad and extensive background in biomedical science and biological/forensic anthropology. This expertise is unique and encompasses a wide range of research areas, with a specific focus on the critical connection between neurodegeneration, cell stressors, and the metabolism of carbohydrates and lipids.
Corthalis feels privileged to contribute to improving healthcare in underserved regions and communities by serving as a consultant in diagnostic technology and biologics delivery for Doctors Without Borders and also has an unwavering dedication to advocating for equitable access to healthcare for all individuals and am passionate about fostering public engagement in science and amplifying the representation of the LGBTQIA community in STEM fields.

Please join the Center for Nonproliferation Studies (CNS) for an Open House celebrating our new space at Middlebury College and the work of our students, faculty, and staff. CNS is the largest U.S.-based nongovernmental organization dedicated to research, teaching, and training on threats from weapons of mass destruction. For more than 35 years, the Center has worked to educate the next generation of nonproliferation experts. Its new Middlebury office expands CNS’s presence alongside existing locations in Monterey, Washington, DC, and Vienna.

Alan Mikhail is the Chace Family Professor of History at Yale University. He is the author of six books that have been translated into ten languages. His work has helped to establish the field of Middle East environmental history, positioned the Ottoman Empire at the center of global early modern history, and creatively scrutinized the place of the archive in the making of past and present.
