ITS works with our stakeholders to bring community input and guidance to the technology decision-making process.

Ad Hoc Tech Committees

Ad Hoc Tech Committees are formed to address specific needs or projects at Middlebury. These committees provide additional guidance and oversight during large-scale projects and planning activities and are created by the Office of the CIO and other Middlebury leadership.

Ad hoc committees are temporary, and are dissolved after completing an objective or initiative.


The Digital Learning, ITS and Library Engagement (DIALECT) committee provides guidance to ITS and others such as the Office of Digital Learning and Inquiry (DLINQ). DIALECT advises on ways technology can be used to address pedagogical needs and improve student outcomes.

GMHEC is a collaborative endeavor of Champlain College, Middlebury College, and Saint Michael’s College to share common administrative services. As part of this collaboration, ITS provides universal technology support, from software implementation to security policies. 

Information Security Advisory Committee

Governance is a key component of Middlebury’s information security program.

The Information Security Advisory Committee (ISAC) provides management and oversight of our InfoSec program. This requires developing, maintaining, auditing, and enforcing security standards and procedures.

Besides creating policies and procedures, governance also provides:

  • continual assessment and mitigation of risks and threats,
  • event and incident response management,
  • and strategic information security guidance for Middlebury’s initiatives.

ISAC works with the Office of General Counsel to address the legal ramifications of InfoSec policy.

Strategic Advisory Team

The purpose of the IT Strategic Advisory Team shall be to:

  • Discuss, review and recommend large-scale IT projects to the VPs and the President.
  • Provide constructive advice, feedback and direction to the AVP for IT.
  • Ask and brainstorm the following question, “How can technology be leveraged to offer Middlebury a strategic advantage as it relates to at least…”
    • Innovation of the curriculum (e.g. on-line/distance learning; collaborative research; student and faculty creativity)
    • Operational efficiency, business intelligence, reporting
    • Marketing initiatives/reputation/visibility/recruiting
    • Collaboration/communication (internally and/or with constituents — supporters, alumni, parents, prospects)
    • Enhancing the “Middlebury Experience” – for students, for faculty, for staff

All team members are encouraged and expected to think critically and creatively, share their ideas and raise appropriate questions and offer recommendations.  All team members will avoid conflicts of interest and are responsible for acting in the best interest of Middlebury.  Team members are expected to regularly attend meetings (scheduled quarterly) or to provide notice if they cannot attend.

The team will assess its performance in relation to this charter at least annually.

Web Strategy Group

The Web Strategy Group is a combination of staff from Information Technology Services, Communications and Marketing, and DLINQ who meet monthly to coordinate high-level strategy between these offices. The group is currently focused on developing a framework for governance of the content on sites within in alignment with our values for the web, a review of the accessibility of web platforms to ensure compliance with WCAG 2.0 AA, and specifications for the next generation of services like the online directory and knowledge base.
