Middlebury Campus
Bread Loaf Campus

The Bread Loaf campus is located in the midst of the Green Mountain National Forest, along Vermont Route 125, roughly 11 miles from Middlebury, which is, in turn, roughly 40 miles south of Burlington and 40 miles north of Rutland.

By Air

The closest airport is Burlington International (BTV). We will be arranging for limited shuttle service from BTV to the Bread Loaf campus on Saturday, June 28 and Sunday, June 29; look for an email from Dianne Baroz with more details as we finalize those arrangements. You may also use the train and taxi services listed below to get from BTV to Bread Loaf.

By Train

Amtrak has a station in Middlebury. When searching the Amtrak website, do note that you can choose as your destination “Middlebury-Amtrak Station” or “Middlebury College.” Choosing the latter will show you a “mixed service” option (train from NYC to Albany, NY, then a bus from Albany to the Middlebury campus) that will arrive around 4:30 pm, which may be preferable to the direct train, which arrives at the downtown Middlebury train station at around 9 pm. You may also take the train to Rutland or Essex Junction and arrange transportation from there.

To get to the Bread Loaf campus:

  • from the Middlebury train station, sign up for a Bread Loaf-run shuttle. Limited times and spaces will be available; more information will be posted in the spring.
  • from the Middlebury, Rutland, or Essex Junction station, check with Jessica’s Vital Transit: 802-349-8833. Service is limited so you may want to arrange the taxi before you purchase your train ticket.

By Bus

Vermont Translines (844-888-7267) runs buses from Montreal, Boston, Albany, and New York City to Middlebury, but not to the Bread Loaf campus. To get to campus, try one of the taxi services above.

By Car

From points south and west: Take Interstate 87 North (the NY Thruway and “the Northway”) to Exit 20 / Rte. 149 East and then to Rte. 4 East. Take Exit 4 / Rte. 30 North to Middlebury, and then follow signs to Rte. 7 South. Take Rte. 7 South (for about 5 miles) to Rte. 125 East (on your left). The road goes through the small town of East Middlebury, takes a sharp right over a bridge, and heads up the mountain. After about 5 minutes, you’ll come to the even tinier town of Ripton (take the speed limit seriously). After another 5 minutes you’ll see the Bread Loaf campus, a striking collection of mostly yellow Victorian buildings, impossible to miss. The first (very large) yellow building on the left is the Bread Loaf Inn. The Front Desk for check-in is located just inside the front door.

From Burlington: Take Rte. 7 South to Middlebury and follow the directions above.

From Boston or points east: Take Interstate 93 North to Interstate 89 North. Follow 89 North into Vermont and take exit 3 for Bethel / Rte. 107 West. Take 107 West to Rte. 100 North to Rte. 125 West. The Bread Loaf campus is about a ten-minute drive from the junction of Routes 100 and 125. The Bread Loaf Inn will be on the right.

Getting Around on Campus

It’s useful to have a car at Bread Loaf Vermont, since public transportation to and from campus is limited and the only nearby “shop” (the Ripton General Store) is three miles away.

You will be able to park on campus in designated lots: (in front of the Barn and beside Frothingham). Parking is NOT permitted on Rte. 125 (except for loading and unloading) or on any of the campus roads.

The Front Desk of the Bread Loaf Inn (the main dormitory) runs free shuttle service to/from town at designated hours one to two times per day during the week.
