Statement on language in archival and library catalogs

Middlebury Special Collections works to describe materials in a way that is respectful to the communities we serve. We recognize that some of our catalog records and finding aids—created years or decades ago—may contain offensive or harmful language. Such language represents biases that have long contributed to the silencing of underrepresented and marginalized voices, and may require updating. Read the full statement here.

Finding our collections

Middlebury’s collection of rare books and manuscripts range from a cuneiform tablet to literary papers and contemporary pop-up books. They can be searched for using the library catalog. Visit ArchivesSpace to search for literary manuscripts. Read more about accessing our collections.

Citing our collections

Do you need help citing primary sources, archives, manuscripts, photographs, and other unique sources? We recommend trying the Library Citation & Style Guide at go/citation. Citation guidelines for books, maps, and newspapers help with Special Collections materials too.

Citing handwritten manuscripts, diaries, or letters? We turn to the Library of Congress Citing Primary Sources guide for examples in Chicago/Turabian and MLA.

Still have questions? Email us at specialcollections@middlebury.edu. We love a citation challenge.
