BLST Cross-Listing Guidance

If you are considering submitting a course for cross-listing with Black Studies, you will be asked to fill out a cross-listing proposal form. The program’s curriculum board will assess this form along with your own course proposal and/or syllabus using the below criteria to determine whether the course is an appropriate fit for cross-listing in Black Studies.

The BLST curriculum board will look favorably on cross-listing proposals where the course demonstrates at least one of the following:

  1. At least one-half of your course’s content (readings, films, lessons, assignments, etc.) is composed of work from Black Studies scholars, work that is regularly and reasonably understood to be taken up within Black Studies, and/or work that fits within the epistemological frameworks practiced within Black Studies

    OR

  2. At least one-third of your course’s content (readings, films, lessons, assignments, etc.) is composed of work from Black Studies scholars, work that is regularly and reasonably understood to be taken up within Black Studies, and/or work that fits within the epistemological frameworks practiced within Black Studies AND at least one-third of the remaining material within the course consists of work that is either from or is reasonably understood to be taken up within the broader field of study of Critical Race & Ethnic Studies

The BLST curriculum board will make determinations as to whether proposed cross-listed courses meet either of these standards. If the curriculum board determines a submitted course does not meet the standards necessary for cross-listing, the instructor will have the opportunity to revise the proposal and/or elaborate their explanation as to how their course fits within Black Studies. The instructor will then be able to resubmit their request at a later date, should they choose.
