Collegium performing in McCardell Bicentennial Hall, December 2019.

Collegium is a small ensemble of singers and instrumentalists that specialize in “early” music, of the Renaissance and Baroque eras, directed by Professor Jeffrey Buettner.

We are excited by the challenge of this music, its marvelous complexity and its simple beauty.

Auditions

Students are invited to audition when places in the group are available. Ensemble members typically have backgrounds of relatively substantial performance experience, and are capable of performing music one per part and preparing outside of rehearsals.

Performances

The ensemble performs throughout the year and travels occasionally for workshops and performances. Recent performances in December, 2019 included secular and sacred music for strings, continuo and voices, with performances in the Davis Family Library and McCardell Bicentennial Hall. Collegium has performed a variety of European sacred and secular vocal repertoire, highlights including Tallis’ “Preces and Responses” (2019), East’s “Quick, Quick Away, Dispatch”/”No Haste But Good” (2018), Monteverdi’s “L’Arianna” (2016) in collaboration with members of the Department of Dance; Cantata 106 by J.S. Bach (2015).
