Doris Kirchner received her PhD in German Languages and Literatures from the University of Pennsylvania. She is Professor Emerita of German at the University of Rhode Island where she also directed the German International Business Program. She has taught at the Joseph H. Lauder Institute of Management and International Studies at the Wharton School, at Huazhong University in Wuhan, China and at Columbia University.
Her research interests include twentieth century German literature, especially literature of "Inner Emigration", regionalism, and representations of trauma in literature. Her publications focus on twentieth century German literature and the linkage of German with other disciplines.

GRMN 3401 - Stylistics ▹
Stylistics, Expository Writing, and Communication
This course meets for about two hours daily and forms the core of the 400 level program. It aims at strengthening the student's ability to write and speak German at an advanced level through development of speaking, listening, reading, and writing skills with an emphasis on advanced elements of communication and style. Attention will be paid to fine points of grammar, use of idioms, appropriate register. Classroom activities are enhanced by audio and video material as well as visitations by, and subsequent discussions with, German School guests and visitors. Lectures, films, and other cultural events of the German School will be incorporated into the course.

GRMN 3410 - 20C & 21C German Literature ▹
20th Century Literature of the German Speaking Countries
Based on literary texts of various lengths the course explores issues of cultural and historical importance as reflected in literature from 1945 to the present. The course aims at extensive classroom discussions, creative writing assignments of increasing difficulty, and students' presentations on different literary topics. The course also incorporates audio-visual materials as they relate to an understanding of Germany from 1945 onward.

GRMN 6601 - Adv Language Practice
This course will focus on various forms of academic writing, including the specific use of vocabulary, style and grammar. Students will have the opportunity to practice writing summaries of texts, presentations and discussions. Additionally, proper quoting and commenting as well as structuring a text – such as a course or term paper – will be discussed and practised. Finally, students will be given the opportunity to write their own papers, reports and comments.
