Christine Sommerfeldt received her MA with the honor of "Meisterschülerin" from the Düsseldorf Art Academy, where she studied fine art photography with Bernd Becher and Thomas Ruff. She lives in Düsseldorf, Germany where her studio is located. Her work has been shown in national and international exhibitions. Currently she is working on a photographic art project with dancers of Tango Argentino.
She also does commercial portrait photography for writers, artists and entrepreneurs.
When teaching photography classes her aim is to encourage her students' perception, awareness and creativity. Rather than doing lots of photo-technical exercises, her students learn about their own inner critic, their inner artist and the various ways both of them can express themselves. In her classes students experiment with simple digital cameras and often suddenly "find" images that seem to have been hidden before.
In her second year at Middlebury, Christine is very much looking forward to teaching jointly with writer Zora del Buono. With Zora she will offer combined classes of journalism and photography.

Beyond the Headlines: The German print media landscape
This course explores the German print media landscape between yellow press and feuilleton. We will discuss the different types of textes like reportage, commentary or portrait. We analyse texts, write our own articles, and meet German speaking people in Middlebury for interviews and reportages. We learn how to edit, to text headlines and captions. Twice a week we’ll develop in editorial staff meetings our own magazine „Quasi Nr. 2“, which will be designed by a professional Art Director in Berlin.
