In addition to the general application requirements, applicants to the Spanish Graduate Program must complete the following:

Online Language Placement Exam

Once we have received your application and the $75 application fee, the School of Spanish will email you instructions for the online placement exam.

Submission of the online placement must be completed before your application will be reviewed for an admissions decision.

School of Spanish MA and DML candidates who have already completed their summer of candidacy need not take the online language assessment. However, we reserve the right to require you to take the language assessment again if it has been a significant amount of time since you last attended a Spanish graduate session at Middlebury.

MA in Applied Languages

Students applying to the MA in Applied Languages must provide a Statement of Purpose in language and a C.V./résumé in language using this sample template.

Applicants to the “Social and Community Action” specialization must hold a bachelor’s degree in Spanish or social sciences (sociology, psychology, anthropology, education, social work, political science) and have a graduate level proficiency in Spanish. Volunteer or work experience in community programs, nongovernmental organizations, social work, or public service is recommended. 

Applicants to the “Cultural Heritage and Tourism Studies” specialization must hold a bachelor’s degree in the humanities, social sciences or environmental sciences, and have a graduate level proficiency in Spanish.

Those applying to the summer program followed by the academic year abroad must apply by March 15 and have a valid passport at least six months after the end date of the program.
