Kenneth S. Habib

Associate Director

Ken Habib is an associate professor in the Music Department of Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo. His doctorate from the University of California, Santa Barbara, is in ethnomusicology, with specializations in the Middle East and American popular music. Concentrating on the Eastern Mediterranean, his research particularly investigates the collaboration of the iconic Lebanese singer Fairouz and the Rahbani composers. Foci include musical and textual analysis, use of musical arts in the creation of personal and social meaning, and experience of music culture in diaspora. He earned his Certificate in College and University Teaching and his MA at UCSB, and his BA at UCLA. Dr. Habib also has taught at Cuesta College, Pomona College, Santa Barbara City College, and UCSB. His responsibilities at Cal Poly include direction of the Arab Music Ensemble; his recent recordings include an album of original Eastern Arab art music, Salam; and his recent articles appear in the Journal of Popular Music Studies and the Encyclopedia of Islam.
