Rosemary Feal


Rosemary G. Feal, Executive Director Emerita of the Modern Language Association of America, led the worldwide association of humanities scholars from 2002 to 2017. She has been the Mary L. Cornille Visiting Distinguished Professor in the Humanities at Wellesley College during the 2017–2018 academic year. Rosemary Feal is Professor Emerita of Spanish at the University at Buffalo, State University of New York, where she was chair of the Department of Modern Languages and Literatures. From 1987 to 1998 she was a member of the faculty at the University of Rochester. A past member and vice president of the Board of Directors of the National Humanities Alliance, she also served on the Board of Directors of the American Council of Learned Societies. Recently, Rosemary Feal served as a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences Commission on Language Learning, which wrote the 2017 report America’s Languages: Investing in Language Education for the Twenty-First Century in response to a bipartisan request from members of the United States Senate and the House of Representatives.

Rosemary Feal is coeditor of the SUNY Series in Latin American Iberian Thought and Culture. She is also an associate editor of the Afro-Hispanic Review and former senior consulting editor of the Latin American Literary Review. Her book publications include Isabel Allende Today (editor); Painting on the Page: Interartistic Approaches to Modern Hispanic Texts (coauthor); and Novel Lives: The Fictional Autobiographies of Guillermo Cabrera Infante and Mario Vargas Llosa. Her articles have appeared in Diacritics, MLN, Texto critic, and Letras femeninas, among others. Her keynote addresses at conferences have covered topics such as the role of the humanities at institutions of higher learning, trends in language study, fostering translingual and transcultural competencies, and financial literacy for department chairs. A dedicated teacher and mentor, Rosemary Feal is the recipient of two awards for excellence in teaching.

Rosemary Feal earned a PhD in Spanish from the University at Buffalo, State University of New York, and a BA from Allegheny College. She also completed the Bachillerato en Letras at the Instituto Belga Guatemalteco (Guatemala). Rosemary Feal was a 1997 Fellow at the Humanities Institute at Stony Brook University (State University of New York) and a 2011–12 American Council on Education Fellow at the Five Colleges, Incorporated.
