This OSHA standard was promulgated to minimize or eliminate occupational exposure to the hepatitis B virus, HIV, and other blood-borne pathogens through contact with blood and other potentially infectious materials. Institutions must provide annual training, engineering controls, personal protective equipment, hepatitis B vaccination, waste handling procedures, incident reporting, post-exposure medical follow-up, and recordkeeping. At Middlebury College, these responsibilities are handled by Environmental Health and Safety. Noncompliance during work funded by a federal grant or contract is penalized by termination of the grant or cancellation of the contract.
