How It Works
MiddCAM partners with Middlebury Union High School (MUHS) and Mt. Abraham Union High School (MAUHS) to match mentors with students, many of whom will be the first in their families to attend college. Matching takes place each February, and the mentoring relationship continues through the end of the year as students prepare and submit their applications. Mentors provide personalized support on exploring colleges, writing essays, and understanding financial aid.
The community grows through one-on-one mentoring, drop-in sessions at the schools (often over pizza or breakfast), and reflection gatherings where mentors share experiences and advice. MiddCAM mentors work closely with high schoolers, building genuine peer-to-peer connections rather than traditional tutoring relationships. Mentors don’t just assist with college applications; they talk with their mentees about college life, personal interests, moods, and hobbies (which are intentionally considered during the matching process). Over months of collaboration, mentors witness their mentees grow not only as applicants but also in confidence, self-understanding, and overall well-being. This is more than academic support; it’s a meaningful, long-term relationship that transforms both mentee and mentor.
As a mentor, you will develop leadership, communication, and advising skills while learning about educational equity and college access in the local community. You will collaborate with CCE staff, Middlebury Admissions, school counselors, and student leaders who support your growth every step of the way.
