Are you an Addison County teacher interested in Language in Motion?

Host teachers are matched with Language in Motion presenters whose topics and/or language skills both meet and further course objectives.

LiM host teachers have included social studies teachers, English teachers, music teachers, history teachers, language acquisition teachers, and physical education teachers, among others.

Benefits to K-12 Students

In addition to exposing school-age children to diverse culture, language, and perspective, LiM presentations serve as powerful and motivating examples of what is possible while seeking a college degree. Plus, the K-12 students usually love having a college student as a visiting instructor.

LiM presenters have listed student enthusiasm as an extremely rewarding aspect of the program for them.

Become a Host Teacher

If you are interested in becoming a host teacher for LiM, please email Kristen Mullins (kmullins@middlebury.edu).

Kristen will ask for your course schedule, upcoming curricular topics, and what type of presentation might be a good fit for your classroom. You will then be matched with a Middlebury College student whose interests and experience align with your objectives.

Once matched, you and the student presenter will agree on a date and time for the class visit. LiM staff will work with student presenters to fine tune their presentations and ensure they have transportation to and from your school.

Supporting Successful Student Presentations

Host teachers can support successful presentations by preparing your students. This could include the following:

  • Sharing the topic in advance
  • Brainstorming relevant questions prior to the presentation
  • Assigning reflection questions in advance to serve as writing prompts once the presentation is over.

It is important that host teachers remain in the classroom during presentations. Presenters receive training and support from Language in Motion staff to help them develop relevant and engaging materials, but they are not prepared to take full responsibility for classroom management.

Stories from the Field

I had a wonderful experience with the two LiM presenters that visited my AP Spanish and Spanish 2 classes. Both were very knowledgeable and gave informative and interesting presentations. My students were engaged, and they learned a lot. I am excited to have other Middlebury College students visit next semester.

This presentation increased my desire to continue a language past high school.
- High School Spanish Student

There is a large, important part of a country’s culture that you don’t notice at first, unless you immerse yourself in it.
- High School French Student

The most important new thing I learned from this presentation is that it’s important to be aware of news from around the world.
