Transportation

Getting from one place to the other can be tricky in Addison County, which is a rural area. You may use your own mode of transportation if you have it, but you should be aware that you are accepting responsibility for the risks associated with driving your personal vehicle to a community engagement experience.

Transportation is even trickier if you do not have your own transportation. Often students will decide on a community engagement opportunity without factoring in transportation and how they will get there. We can provide resources and meet with you to discuss options about transportation, but ultimately ensuring you have a way to get to your community engagement experience is your responsibility.

Tri-Valley Transit Resources

Addison County has a free bus service which can pick students up from ADK Circle or by Twilight Hall. This bus service has multiple routes with stops in many different towns around Addison County. You may also request specific drop-offs or pickups on existing routes, so it is a great first stop to explore transportation options if you don’t have your own transportation.

Check out Tri-Valley Transit and their bus routes. You must call them to arrange a drop-off or pickup that is not on an existing route.

CCE Student Drivers

We employ students each semester to help drive students to community engagement opportunities in Addison County; however, there is no guarantee that a student driver will be available to drive you. Reach out to Liz Cleveland (ecleveland@middlebury.edu) if you are interested in seeing if a student driver is available.

College License and Driving Risks

If you are driving a personal vehicle on College business, which includes transporting others to a community engagement opportunity, you must first obtain a College License. This allows the College to know when and where students, faculty, and staff are driving on behalf of the College.

Note: Even with a completed College License, if you drive a personal vehicle or ride in someone else’s personal vehicle for community engagement purposes, you are assuming risk and responsibility in case of an accident while driving. If you are driving your personal vehicle for community engagement purposes, we ask that you read and sign this Statement of Risk for Non-College Vehicles so you are aware of the personal risks to driving in a personal vehicle for College business.

The College will cover incidents occurred while driving to an experience if you have a College License AND are driving a College rental vehicle (available only to students through a Community Engagement Organization). See below for information on renting a Middlebury College vehicle on behalf of a Middlebury Community Engagement Organization or other student organization.

Vehicle and Van Rentals Driving Form

If you are driving on behalf of a Community Engagement Organization (CEO) or other student organization and you wish for the College to hold responsibility for the risks of driving to and from a volunteer event, you may rent a College vehicle for a daily cost. For large group transportation to and from an experience, you may also rent a College Van for a daily cost after completing the College License and Van Road Test process.

There are limited rental vehicles and vans available so we recommend submitting a request as early as possible if you know you need transportation for a large number of people.
