This lecture will focus on architectural representations and their relationship to conceptual frameworks both within the architectural project and beyond to varying ontologies. The talk will consider the way in which architectural representations are not just embodiments of architectural knowledge, but also ways of seeing and being in the world. The deliberate questioning of what to represent and how to represent is a disciplinary responsibility that is companion to the act of world building.

Film Screening: Song of Rapa Nui

“Song of Rapa Nui” tells the story of Mahani Teave, who left Rapa Nui (Easter Island) at age 9 to pursue her dream of becoming a classical pianist. At age 30, on the brink of international success, Teave gives up her career to pursue a new dream; a free music school for the island’s children. Teave hopes to shape a bold future for Rapa Nui and inspire change on Earth, our island home.  Enjoy the screening in advance of Teave’s Middlebury concert on Friday. A brief Q&A with Teave will follow the film.

  • Svea Closser Lecture: Engaging Community Health Workers in Global Health Policymaking through Reality TV Competitions

Community Health Workers (CHWs), the majority of whom are women, are the bedrock of primary care provision across the world but are often employed at the bottom of health hierarchies where they have little voice. We developed a policymaking “Shark Tank” competition for female CHWs working on polio vaccination in Peshawar, Pakistan. Structured processes can allow the least powerful actors in global health structures to suggest innovations that work for them.
