  • Taking a Leap with Novel Approaches to Teaching and Learning

    Join us for this lunch, panel discussion, and workshop with Julia Berazneva (Economics), Ellery Foutch (American Studies), Alex Lyford (Math), Alexis Mychajliw (Biology), and Greg Pask (Biology). Following a brief panel discussion about faculty’s experiences with teaching through play, project-based learning, research-based learning, and community-connected public humanities labs, participants will be able to meet with the panelists to discuss ideas for experimenting with their own instructional approaches.

  • Harm and Forgiveness in Restorative Justice

    As a highlight of a new course in “conflict transformation (CT) skills,” the CT Collaborative features sujatha baliga as a contributor to the Winter term, offering her expertise in the area of harm and forgiveness in restorative justice. sujatha baliga’s work is characterized by an equal dedication to crime survivors and people who’ve caused harm. A former victim advocate and public defender, baliga was awarded a Soros Justice Fellowship in 2008 which she used to launch a pre-charge restorative juvenile diversion program. sujatha earned her A.B. from Harvard and Radcliffe Colleges, her J.D.

    Head on down to Axinn every Wednesday this month for our January Improv Workshop! We’ll teach you the fundamentals of improv comedy, play some fun games and warmups, and eventually delve into some long form! This workshop is open to all students–no experience required.

    Freedom Dreaming: Envisioning an Antiracist Middlebury

    “Freedom Dreaming: Envisioning an Antiracist Middlebury” is a research and theatre piece examining the academic experience of BIPOC students at Middlebury College. The project has roots and wings in student voice via the core question: “What would an antiracist Middlebury look like, sound like, feel like in an academic setting?” We were interested in holding space for struggle while saving room for possibility. To do so we conducted over 60 interviews with mostly BIPOC students on our campus. We then transcribed and coded those interviews and used them as the basis of this theatre piece.

Knowing how to read is fundamental, but do we prepare our students to meet the objectives we set for reading assignments in our courses? How can we understand and communicate the value of this fundamental skill and the various reading processes our students need to use?

    Join midd.data for a Lightning Talk with Andrea Robbett (Economics). American politics is currently characterized by polarized beliefs about otherwise verifiable realities, a pathology often ascribed to the influence of “echo chambers” on like-minded partisans. We conducted an online experiment to characterize the demand for, and use of, social information about political beliefs.

    The Hunt is a 72 hour campus-wide scavenger hunt at the end of J-term. This year’s Hunt dates from Thursday Jan. 19th 1:00pm to Sunday Jan. 22nd at 1:00pm.     Calling all people interested in Japanese Culture, World History, History and Culture of Indigenous Peoples, Linguistics, East Asian Studies, and Film! We will be doing a Screening of Naomi Mizoguchi’s 2019 Documentary “Ainu: Indigenous People of Japan!” Prior to the documentary, we will be doing a small presentation about Ainu Culture and answering any basic questions concerning. After the documentary, we have the wonderful opportunity to be meeting the Documentary’s creator Naomi Mizoguchi over zoom! We will be able to ask her questions concerning the Ainu People and filmmaking!
