    Reminisce about eclipses past! Materials on view include a newly donated 1748 eclipse map, a 1653 book featuring Galileo’s lunar observations, and a drawing of an 1806 eclipse by a Middlebury student! Themed snacks provided.

    Disiecta Membra: What can small and broken black-figure pots tell us about festivals in ancient Athens?

    An analysis of the ceramics of Classical Athens known as ‘late black figure’ has begun to reveal that they served very important functions for participants in the ample festivals in ancient Athens. In this talk Prof. Smith will reveal the clues—shape, size, and images—that point to the festival use of these small and fragmentary vessels that are found in abundance in Mediterranean excavations and the storerooms of museums.

    Xan Smiley’s career in journalism has spanned more than half a century, predominantly as a writer and editor for The Economist, focusing on coverage of sub-Saharan Africa, Russia and the Soviet Union, the Middle East, the European Union, and the United States. In this lecture, Xan will analyze the success and failures of The Economist’s (and his own) coverage of events that have shaped the world.

  • Zach Nader: Our Own Sense of Time

    Zach Nader will discuss his artistic practice, sharing the ways in which his recent image-based experiments destabilize photographs, using them as locating devices that shape our understanding of the way images function in the world. Nader is a Brooklyn-based artist investigating the feedback loop between images and our world, altering and interrupting photographic information while compressing the distinctions between physical and virtual mark-making.

    Ballet returns to the Dance Department this Spring. Classical Ballet technique in traditional ballet class structure. No pointe shoes, please.
    Each session is open to a maximum of 20 participants. PE credit is available for attendance at 8 classes. Previous dance experience in any form is recommended.

  • College Lands Master Plan Listening Session

    Middlebury College, under the leadership of the College Lands Advisory Committee, is crafting a master plan for the 3,000 acres of college lands in the Champlain Valley, and we are engaging a broad array of thought partners to help envision opportunities. Our public information-gathering will give us a broad view of values that our local communities and citizens perceive for these 3,000 acres. We are also interested in understanding organizational and individual visions and ideas, and look forward to hearing first-hand ideas about these lands.
