    Make the most of your summer research experience by learning to leverage your new skills and update your resume with Tim Mosehauer from the Center for Careers and Internships. This session will be held twice: once at noon (non-STEM) and again at 7 pm (STEM). All SRAs are welcome at either session as there will be overlap. Registration is appreciated for the lunch count.

    MiddLab Data Workshops: Intro to Geospatial Data in R

    This lesson focuses on working with geospatial data - managing and understanding spatial data formats, understanding coordinate reference systems, and working with raster and vector data in R for analysis and visualization. We will learn the basics of working with spatial data in R, and will create basic but high quality maps.

    Participants should have basic familiarity with R. If you are completely new to R, please be sure to attend the Introduction to R workshop on July 14, 2022.

    Special Collections Open House: Diderot's Encyclopédie

    Middlebury owns all 35 volumes of Denis Diderot’s Encyclopédie, a founding work of the Enlightenment. For the first time in recent memory, we’re displaying them all, in honor of the 250th anniversary of the final volume’s publication. With its 75,000 entries, 20 million words, and 2,569 richly detailed illustrated plates, the Encyclopedie aimed to “change the way people think” and encompass “all the knowledge scattered on the surface of the earth.”

    MiddLab Data Workshops: High-Performance Computing and Slurm at Middlebury

    High-performance computing (HPC) empowers users to perform complex calculations in parallel. HPC increases the speed and efficiency of computer simulations and data analysis through aggregated computing power and memory. This session will introduce Middleury’s “ada” HPC cluster, including access and use with the Slurm queuing software. Slurm manages job processing and ensures fair access. Basic familiarity with the linux command line will be assumed.

    Stargazing at Mittelman Observatory

    Mittelman Observatory will again host stargazing open house nights this summer. These Observatory events are scheduled for Wednesday evenings, June 29, July 20, July 27, and August 3, from 9:30 PM until 11:00 PM, weather permitting.

    Saturn will be in the evening sky on some of these dates. A variety of interesting stars, star clusters, and nebulae will be visible through the Observatory’s telescopes. The Observatory includes a 24-inch telescope in a dome and smaller telescopes on the roof deck.

  • K-12 Education: Alternate Routes for Obtaining a Teaching Credential

    In this session, Chinese School Associate Director and former public school teacher Mairead Harris will give an overview of the options available for aspiring language teachers who wish to work in public schools. Obtaining a credential or license is often a barrier for aspiring teachers; Mairead will walk participants through some common ways to pursue an appropriate teaching credential outside of a licensure degree program.
