Major Advising Checklist: Environmental Studies—Geology

Automatic Joint Major:  ESGL-GEOL

All ESGL-GEOL majors should use this form as they plan out the timing of their major coursework.

Please enter the semester the course was taken or will be taken. For any electives, please also enter the course number.

I. Core Courses

These four courses must be completed by the end of the junior year.

(GEOG 0320 Geographic Information Systems can be used by the students of the class of 2013 and prior)

II. Cognate Courses: Humanities or Social Sciences from Approved List

Students doing environmental science foci need to take two cognates outside of the natural sciences.

III. Focus:
Course 1:

One introductory course from among GEOL 0112 (preferred), GEOL 0161, and GEOL 0170

Course 2:

One course from among GEOL/GEOG 0251, GEOL/GEOG 0255, and GEOL/GEOG O257

Course 3:

One course from among GEOL 0201, GEOL 0211, and GEOL 0281

Courses 4-6:

Three electives, one of which can be ENVS 0360, and two of which must be at the GEOL 0300-level

Courses 7-8:

Two courses of senior work, GEOL 0400 and GEOL 0700

IV. Senior Experience

Students must have completed all four core courses before they can enroll in ES 401.

V. Off-campus course substitutions (if applicable)

For students studying off-campus, a total of up to three courses may count toward the major. Courses for the focus need approval from the advisor. Courses for cognates need approval from the director in consultation with other appropriate faculty members.
