Library Services

Academic Technology - Research, assess, design, develop, disseminate, promote and support current and emerging technologies for teaching, learning and research.    

Acquisitions - Locate, order, and pay for all library materials; review and sign licensing agreements for online database and journal purchases; handle film rentals for most campus/departmental film screenings; receive periodicals; label, barcode, security strip newly purchased materials.                

Administration - Organizational planning & development, financial planning, business process analysis, assessment & analytics, strategic planning, project management, policy, communications, disaster recovery and business continuity.  

Borrowing Services -  Circulate library materials and loaner equipment to borrowers; maintain library shelving              

Cataloging - Describe library materials in library catalog and digital asset management systems according to national standards; accept Library of Congress monograph cataloging with minimal review and revision, concentrating on non-LC material, foreign language, and unique materials; possibly outsource music cataloging in part or in whole; work with outside vendors and with in-house staff to maintain catalog accuracy of catalog records and headings (e.g. names, titles, subjects); time from receipt to shelf for some titles may be extended                    

Collection Development - Coordinate selection of library materials in collaboration with faculty and liaisons; set selection priorities and monitor library budgets; capture and review data to facilitate collection assessment; process and acknowledge gifts added to the collection.        

Government Documents - Build, maintain, and promote use of and access to government information resources, including digitization and creation of finding aids                    

Interlibrary Loan - Borrow materials not held by Middlebury from other libraries for our users; loan materials from our collection to other libraries                    

Liaison Program - Communicate with academic departments; facilitate Library-faculty interactions as needed; provide assistance, instruction, and consultation on library and instructional technology resources; participate in collection development

Preservation - Oversee the preservation and care of circulating and special collections including climate control monitoring, pest control, education, security, and facilities maintenance; make treatment decisions about library materials in need of repair or preservation; perform repair, binding, and conservation work in-house for library collections.

Reserves - Place course material on reserve upon faculty request for students 

Special Collections & Archives - Serve as a research laboratory for students, faculty, College administration, staff, alumni, the Middlebury community, and independent scholars to access and explore rare books, archives, manuscripts, photographs, audio and video recordings, and other rare and unique materials; negotiate gifts of rare and valuable materials; oversee the digitization of primary source materials; oversee the design of public exhibitions. 

Systems - Administer, provide programming and scripting services as needed, and support library systems including the library catalog (MIDCAT), discovery service (Summon), subject guides (LibGuides), ILL platform (ILLiad), and related systems.
