Rodney King
Roger Guenveur Smith

History, poetry, and tragedy collide when stage and film actor Roger Guenveur Smith (American Gangster, Malcolm X) tackles the thorny odyssey of Rodney King, caught in the glare of the national spotlight as the victim of police brutality that ignited the 1992 L.A. riots. In this riveting performance, Smith offers a meditation on a flawed, good-hearted man and reveals America's endlessly complicated relationship with its racial past and present. "Roger Guenveur Smith gets it all and gets it brilliantly"— New York Times.

Constantinople

Kiya Tabassian, setar & vocals
Pierre-Yves Martel, viola da gamba
Patrick Graham, percussion

Program change:

Constantinople has adjusted their concert program to include music that celebrates the Persian, Mediterranean, and Baroque traditions, adding the Turkish kanun to the mix of instruments.

(Due to international visa complications, kora player Ablaye Cissoko will be unable to join us.)

They will perform works from “Passages,” their journey into the crossroads of the Mediterranean, featuring new and ancient sounds performed by four master musicians from Iran, Turkey and Canada.

They will also treat us to works from their program “Versailles to Topkapı: Echoes of the Baroque Palaces,” blending the music from the Court of Versailles and that of Topkapı Palace, the sophisticated court of Istanbul’s Ottoman sultans.

NEW: Constantinople will also offer a lecture/demonstration on their music, instruments, and collaborations--with guest lecturer Didem Başar, kanun--before the concert, at 7:00 PM in Robison Hall.

Jean-Michel Pilc,
jazz piano

Pilc will perform a solo jazz piano program to be announced from the stage.

Solo piano has always played a central part in Pilc's musical life. "What is this thing called?" is his most recent release. The concept is not new, but it is pretty unique in jazz: a set of variations on a same theme, in this case Cole Porter's "What is this thing called love." Mostly improvised and covering all the wide range and spectrum of Jean-Michel's piano playing, from intimate lyricism to breathtaking virtuosity, the short pieces develop organically to tell a consistent and captivating story. As always with Jean-Michel, the listener is sent on a trip made of unexpected landscapes and powerful emotions.

Kannapolis: A Moving Portrait

Kannapolis: A Moving Portrait
Music by Jenny Scheinman
Film by Finn Taylor
All footage shot between 1936-42 by H. Lee Waters

Jenny Scheinman — composer, arranger, violin, vocals
Robbie Fulks — guitar, banjo, vocals
Robbie Gjersoe — resonator guitar, baritone electric guitar, vocals
Rick LeCompte — film editor
Trevor Jolly — Sound Designer

About the performance:

In this new project commissioned by Duke Performances, acclaimed composer, singer, and violinist, Jenny Scheinman invites us into the captivating visual world of Depression-era filmmaker, H. Lee Waters. From 1936-42, Waters documented over 118 towns in the Carolinas, Virginia, and Tennessee in a collection he called "Movies of Local People." Waters travelled from town to town, filming people going about their lives in the small town South, then worked with local movie theaters to screen his silent shorts, inviting his subjects for a wholly novel experience—to see themselves on the silver screen, alongside Groucho Marx, Alfred Hitchcock, and the Hollywood stars of the time.

With Kannapolis: A Moving Portrait, Scheinman offers her original live score to Waters' footage, masterfully reworked into a new film by director Finn Taylor with editor Rick LaCompte. Scheinman and her musical sidemen—Robbie Fulks and Robbie Gjersoe—create a soundtrack of new folksongs, fiddle music, and field sounds to accompany this fascinating footage. The humanity in these images bares a transcendent, universal quality that speaks to any community as much as to the Piedmont region where it was filmed.

About the performance:

The Ubiquitous Mass of Us is an interdisciplinary performance work created over three intensive rehearsal periods throughout 2013-2014. In this escalating journey, with a hint of other worldliness, we question the bounds of our identities and the way we take up space – Who are we as individuals? Who are we together? How far beyond what we conceive of ourselves can we go? What are the myriad ways in which we inhabit space? What are the visible and invisible boundaries we create? How are these questions impacted by and connected to contemporary issues in a larger context? Here, we bare the complexity of our individual and collective identities through a broad range of physicality and newly discovered expressions that explore the liminal zones and hard lines between.
