Currently completing the year-abroad portion of her MA in Spanish, Katrina Spencer is keeping very busy in Madrid. In addition to teaching English to Madrileños, interning at a trilingual bookstore where she reads Spanish-language stories to children, singing contralto in a university choir, and participating in a Spanish radio interview about the film "Precious" (note: interview begins about a third of the way into the program), she has also become an event organizer for Generation Schengen, a group that promotes permeable European borders and intercultural exchange. In addition, she has started a Facebook group called "Afro-Madrid" for people of African descent living in Madrid; the aim of the group is to promote cultural events and sites that celebrate African heritage and to explore Spain's relationship to Africa, a topic which Katrina hopes will form the basis for her doctoral studies.
