Sophomore Draws

Updated for the 2017 Fall Term process
Check back for 2018 details

In the late Spring, first-year students (including first-year Febs) participate in the Commons room draw for their sophomore year housing. Each Commons sets aside specific rooms within their Commons community for their rising Sophomores. Rising sophomores are able to participate in their own Commons' draw with other rising sophomores from their Commons.

As of this year Commons Sophomore draws will no longer be a live process but will take place on-line.  This will allow all eligible students to participate regardless of their location or distance.

Please make sure to review the information on this webpage, including the Commons-specific details below.

Sophomore Housing Basics - IMPORTANT DETAILS
  • Sophomores will be able to choose beds within their own Commons Community and may not switch Commons affiliations.
  • Sophomores may live in Academic and Special Interest Houses, the Wellness House or, to a limited degree, a Social House. (A list of those programs' webpages can be found at the main Room Draw page link to the left or by using this link, go/roomdraw.)
  • Details about each Common's draw will be shared with students beforehand by their Commons.
  • There are 3 on-line draws which take place at different times as noted further below:
    • 6 & 5pp spaces
    • 4 & 3pp spaces
    • 2 pp spaces &SinglesNote

If your commons is not offering any space(s) of a particular size you will not have the option of participating in that draw, i.e. only Ross Commons has 5 and 6 person suites available so only Ross rising sophomores will have access to that process.

  • There are 2 parts to each draw:
    • Applications are first submitted through the StarRez Portal
    • Time Slots are awarded a participants can choose a location based on what is available that time.
  • Whenever possible, applications should be submitted at the start of a draw's application submission period so any challenges can be dealt with in a timely manner. Please remember that the application part of these processes are not a first-come/first-serve process.
  • Students who already committed to another housing process, i.e. Res Life postion, Interest House, Social House, etc. are not eligible to be included on a StarRez application.  Doing so could result in the loss of any awarded space for the entire group and all other members being housed during the Summer Draw process.
  • If students wish to apply for spaces as a group (6 & 5pp or 4 & 3pp), they must follow the Roommate Group process - it is VERY IMPORTANT that every member of a group sign-on to their portal and create their own application and join the group.
  • If students wish to apply for 2pp spaces they must create a Roommate Pair - it is VERY IMPORTANT that both members of a pair sign-on to their portal and create their own application and "friend" the other person.
  • Students who wish to participate as individuals must sign-on to their portal and create their own application.
  • Pay close attention to the appropriate deadlines as noted below.  Once a deadline passes students cannot amend or submit new applications or go back to choose a space in a draw which has closed.
  • Rising sophomores will receive Time Slots specific to their Commons.
  • Rising sophomore Febs participate during all Fall Housing processes with their peers who matriculated the previous Fall Term.
  • Your Commons may choose to hold Quiet Hall or other unique process, i.e. Cook has one triple, PRS 100, and two 2-room doubles. If so, such spaces will be awarded based on the merit of the members of an application at the discretion of the Commons Team.  Students who choose to participate in such processes are acknowledging the process is not based on any specific factors and there is no guarantee of an award.
  • Room assignments are final and once a student is assigned a bed they may not participate in any other Room Draw process.  In rare cases when a student is allowed to forfeit an assignment they are not eligible to participate in any further Fall Term housing processes and will be housed by the Residential Systems Coordinator during the Summer Draw process.
  • Individual rooms that are blocked for Room Draw purposes are no longer considered a unit as of the end of that process.  Should any singles in those blocks later open up they will be filled by the Residential Systems Coordinator – not by the other members of the original block.

Information Sessions

Individual Commons may hold their own information session(s) to find out details unique to their Common's housing and ask questions.  Should you not be able to make the session contact your CRA or visit your Commons Coordinator if you have questions.  Additionally see the go/roomdrawcalendar for the dates of sessions offered by the Housing office.

Summer Draw

Some sophomores within each Commons maynot receive housing assignments during their Commons' live draw. Those students will be housed during the Summer Draw process. Students should not be concerned if they enter the summer without a housing assignment. All un-housed sophomores will be housed within their Commons communities.
