Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service Registration

The annual Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service will be taking place on Saturday, January 16, 2010!

Middlebury College faculty, staff, and students are invited to participate in community service projects to honor the legacy of Martin Luther King Jr. Transportation will be provided for anyone needing it to volunteer at off-campus project sites. You will be emailed with a confirmation and details of your volunteer service site.

All volunteers are invited to join us for a closing reception on January 16th in Carr Hall at 4:30 pm for a reflection of the day, along with hot chocolate and snacks!

Mountain Street Transitional Housing in Bristol is operated by the John Graham Emergency Shelter and provides individuals and families in transition a place to live. Mountain Street is a new facility and help is needed to clean, paint and complete other miscellaneous tasks to get it ready for residents.

Elderly Services and Helen Porter Nursing and Rehabilitation Center are local eldercare facilities. Middlebury College students who play an instrument or sing are invited to share their talents with local elderly and enjoy fellowship with them following the performance!

Vermont Adult Learning is an organization that provides adults with essential skills education to further their educational, employment and personal goals in order to expand their options and capabilities in the family, community and workplace. VAL is in need of seven to 10 volunteers for three different projects: painting classroom walls, shampooing carpets and building a Poster Bin to hold posters (carpentry skills needed).

Speak Up! Addison County is a self-advocacy organization developed and operated by people with developmental disabilities. Speak Up! is hosting an event at Ilsley Library and volunteers are needed to work self-advocates from the organization to make bookmarks, note cards and other crafts which will be used as fundraisers for Speak Up! This is a great way to learn more about Speak Up!, meet self-advocates and have fun creating art for a good cause! Plus, everyone who participates will be invited to an ice cream party with Speak Up! on January 22nd, 2010 at 6:00 pm!
