Students in front of a bulletin board for Language in Motion.

Language in Motion (LiM) is an educational collaboration that connects Middlebury’s international, study abroad, and upper level language students with local elementary and secondary teachers and schools in Addison County.

Since LiM’s inception, participants have worked with more than 40 teachers in 15 Vermont schools, reaching thousands of children.

How It Works

With support and training, Middlebury College students prepare and deliver age-appropriate lessons that promote global awareness, cultural humility, and world language acquisition. LiM students deepen their intercultural experience and perspectives within the local community while learning to plan and present engaging and meaningful material. LiM participants also receive constructive feedback from educators and peers to develop their work, life, and leadership skills.

Through classroom facilitation, LiM participants gain exposure to the elementary and secondary teaching environment and deepen their international and intercultural experience through personal and shared reflection.

LiM presentations are designed to support the host teacher’s learning objectives. LiM students have worked with social studies, English, math, history, art, and language teachers, among others.

Through LiM participants’ classroom facilitation, school-age children gain new exposure to diverse culture, language, and experience, and the opportunities that college can offer.

Active at Middlebury since 2014, LiM was founded at Juniata College in 2000 and has since been implemented at thirteen other colleges and universities. The Middlebury College LiM program was made possible at Middlebury through the generous support of the Arthur Vining Davis Foundations as well as the support of our consortium partners.

Driving for LiM

LiM is looking for students to help drive students to and from local K-12 schools to deliver their lessons. You need a college license in order to drive.
