Ian Burgin ’08 Memorial Lodge
The Ian Burgin ‘08 Memorial Lodge is a cabin for the Middlebury College community.
It sits along the Rikert Nordic Trails. Student, staff, and faculty groups can use it for overnight stays. It is a great place to visit on a day trip or to stay overnight in the Green Mountains.

Before You Go
Plan on an hour to reach Burgin Lodge on foot from Rikert. Vehicles are not allowed on the trails.
The cabin includes the following
- A wood stove and a supply of wood that you may need to split.
- A camping stove for cooking outdoors.
- You’ll need to get some fuel from the Gear Room, or bring your own.
- Along table and chairs, and a sleeping loft.
- Sleep in the loft, as heat rises.
- Please bring your own sleeping bags or pads.
There is no water source. Please bring 2-4 liters for each person and more for cooking.
There is no indoor restroom. Please use the composting outhouse.
There are no camping supplies. Your group must be self-sufficient with food, cooking pots, and gear for your stay.
Visitor Policies
Please help honor the spirit of this memorial cabin by complying with these necessary rules! We all love the cabin!
- You are responsible for picking up and returning the key within 48 hours of your stay to Student Activities Office, open weekdays from 9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
- You must keep the cabin clean and report any concerns or damage to Rich Connell rconnell@middlebury.edu.
- Drugs, alcohol, or smoking are not allowed in the Burgin Lodge.
- You must provide the name and email address for every guest you intend to bring. Unrecorded guests are not allowed.
- Everyone is responsible for bringing their own overnight gear including bedding. Borrowed gear is available from the Middlebury Outdoor Programs Gear Room.
- There is no water supply at the cabin. You must bring sufficient water for drinking and cooking.
- A wood stove and firewood is available for heat. You should be familiar with fire building if you intend to keep warm. Do not leave the fire unattended, or the stove open with a fire inside.
- Vehicles must display the Burgin Parking Pass on the vehicle dashboard and park in the South Guest Lot only. Parking closest to the row of trees opposite the Rikert Outdoor Center.
- There is minimal cell service at the cabin, and you are far from emergency care.
- No walking on ski trails in the winter. Skis or snowshoes only!
- All guests must sign the consent form found on this reservation form. By adding your guests’ names, they will be emailed the form separately.
Only the reservation holder can pick up the key and the required Burgin Parking Pass. There are no exceptions to this policy.
