Hiking Trails
Trail Around Middlebury (TAM)

The Trail Around Middlebury (TAM) is a 18-mile loop that circles the town of Middlebury, offering a variety of terrains and scenic spots for hikers of all abilities. It’s well-marked and maintained, so it’s an ideal option for those looking to get outdoors without needing a car. Along the way, keep an eye out for local wildlife, beautiful vistas, and peaceful picnic spots.
Snake Mountain

Snake Mountain is one of the most popular hiking destinations near Middlebury, offering a blend of accessible trails and breathtaking views. The trail ascends gradually through a mix of forest and rocky outcrops, making it a rewarding hike for both novice and experienced hikers.
At the summit, you’ll be treated to panoramic views of the Champlain Valley, Lake Champlain, and the majestic Adirondack Mountains in the distance. The trail is well-marked and takes approximately 2-3 hours to complete, making it a great option for a half-day adventure.
This hike is particularly beautiful in the fall when the foliage creates a vibrant tapestry of colors. Be sure to bring water and a camera to capture the stunning vistas from the top!
Falls of Lana/Silver Lake Area

This area is also popular for fishing, kayaking, and picnicking, making it ideal for a fun day out with friends and family. Keep an eye out for local wildlife as you explore!
Mount Moosalamoo

Mount Abraham (Mount Abe)

Trailheads: Lincoln Gap Trailhead (closed in winter), Battell Trailhead (approximately 19 miles from campus)
Mount Abraham, at 4,006 feet, is one of Vermont’s 4,000-footers and offers a challenging hike for those seeking a rewarding adventure. Located about 15 miles from campus, the trail features a steep ascent through diverse landscapes, including dense forests and rocky terrain, leading to breathtaking views from the summit.
At the top, hikers are greeted by panoramic vistas of the Green Mountains and, on clear days, stunning scenery of the Adirondacks across Lake Champlain. The round-trip distance is approximately 6.6 miles when hiking from the Lincoln Gap Trailhead, but this can vary depending on the specific route taken.
Note that the Lincoln Gap Trailhead is closed during the winter months, so hikers should consider starting from the Battell Trailhead instead, which is approximately 19 miles from campus. The hike typically takes 4-6 hours to complete, making it ideal for a full-day excursion.

Otter Creek
