Federal Reserve Research Assistant Programs

Applications are now open for Research Assistant positions across the Federal Reserve System. These opportunities are designed for graduating seniors interested in economics, research, public policy, and graduate study.

Middlebury alumni have recently worked in research roles at the Federal Reserve Board in Washington, DC, and the Federal Reserve Banks of Boston, San Francisco, and St. Louis.

International students: The Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City accepts eligible graduates with STEM OPT authorization for its general Research Associate program.

Brookings Institution Economic Studies Research Assistant positions — Summer 2027

The Brookings Institution is recruiting full-time research assistants for its Economic Studies program, including The Hamilton Project. These two-year, hybrid positions are based in Washington, DC and are designed for recent graduates interested in economic and public policy research.

Applicants should have a bachelor’s degree by summer 2027 in economics, mathematics/statistics, public policy, or another social science with economics coursework. A Senior Research Assistant position with The Hamilton Project is also available for candidates with at least one year of relevant research experience.

Application Deadline: October 16, 2026, for the Economic Studies research assistant pool. Hamilton Project applications are reviewed on a rolling basis, so early applications are encouraged.

NSA Summer 2027 internships are now accepting applications

The National Security Agency offers paid, 12-week summer internships across STEM, cybersecurity, intelligence, foreign languages, communications, business, finance, and other fields. U.S. citizenship is required.

Application Deadline: August 15–September 5 at 11:59 p.m. ET, with selections made on a rolling basis. Apply early to allow time for review and security clearance processing.

State Department Spring and Summer 2027 Applications Open

Opportunities are available in Washington, D.C. and at U.S. posts overseas. The program pays $19.96/hour and provides fully furnished housing and reasonable travel expenses. Applications are open to eligible undergraduate and graduate students, recent graduates, and veterans.

U.S. Department of the Treasury – International Affairs Junior Fellowship

A two-year fellowship for graduating seniors and recent bachelor’s degree recipients interested in international economic policy. Fellows work in the Treasury Department’s Office of International Affairs, conducting policy research and analysis while supporting U.S. engagement with the IMF, World Bank, G7, and G20. Preference is given to undergraduates.

Harry S. Truman Scholarship

A nationally competitive scholarship for juniors committed to careers in public service. Truman Scholars receive funding for graduate school, leadership development, and access to a nationwide network of public service leaders.

Middlebury applicants interested in applying should work with Middlebury’s Center for Teaching, Learning, and Research (CTLR), which coordinates the campus nomination process and provides application advising.

Application deadline: Middlebury’s campus nomination deadline is in the Fall. Check with CTLR.
